Q: Why are there peacocks on my street in Glendora?
A: A century ago a few colorful characters of the San Gabriel Valley—E.J. “Lucky” Baldwin, mapmaker Andrew McNally, and Audubon founder W. Scott Way—allowed their avians to roam uncaged. The descendants of all those free birds (Baldwin’s Pavo cristatus continue to wander his ranch, now the L.A. County Arboretum) went on to colonize the foothills. Luckily they’re big and mean enough to fight off suburban pets.
